History

A.P. Barrett and Troy Johnston opened Barrett's Heating & Air Conditioning LLC in 1968. At that time the business name was Barrett & Johnston Air Conditioning Refrigeration. They started the business repairing window units, automotive A/C and refrigeration. Not only did they do the repair work, but they also answered the phones and handled all the service calls. They were lucky enough to be able to hire Thomas “Tom” Stringer part-time to help with the repair work. Tom went on to be a full-time employee in 1972. At that time the company was located at the corner of N 10th and the feeder of I46 in LaPorte.

In 1973 A.P. Barrett built a new facility for the business at 205 N 11th St in LaPorte. In 1991 Barrett’s went to residential and commercial HVAC only. Tom’s son, Brian, was hired as a technician for the company.

Tom Stringer purchased Barrett’s in 1993 and A.P. Barrett retired to his farm. Loretta, A.P.’s wife, stayed on as office Manager until 1995. Vicki Moon, Barrett’s daughter took over running the office in 1995 and remained until her retirement in 2015. 

Tom Stringer moved the office to 208 E Main St in LaPorte in 1998 where we remain today.

Brian Stringer purchased the business from his dad, Tom Stringer, in 2012. Brian currently leads our company focused on new technology and meeting our customers’ needs.
